General Description
Stroke is an insult of the brain caused by either an ischemic or a hemorrhagic event that affects the brain. A description of the pathology can be found - for instance - on WebMD.
Stroke is a cause of long-term disability. According to the National Stroke Association, about 730,300 people suffer a stroke each year in the US. Two-thirds of these individuals survive and require rehabilitation. Similar incidence of stroke is found in Europe and other industrialized nations.
